Basement Remodeling Costs & How to Choose a Remodeling Contractor

Basement Remodeling Costs & How to Find Remodeling Contractors / Companies

Remodeling your basement is the most cost-effective way to add square footage to your home, and add a potential lifetime income stream through rental. It has a good return on investment, but it isn't cheap. A typical basement remodel will run you between $20-$25 per square ft, but this can very greatly depending on your needs, how much you can do yourself and which basement contractor you work with. On that last note, and I want to really stress this - get many quotes from several local contractors/remodeling companies! When we remodeled our first basement the quotes ranged from 20k to 100k! I used Service Magic to get free quotes from pre-screened contractors & remodelers, and I don't regret it.

So how much does a basement remodel cost?

Rather than re-invent the wheel, I found a great article from cost helper that really covers everything.

With proper planning and attention to detail, a remodeled basement can provide living space that's every bit as attractive and welcoming as the rest of the house.

Typical costs:

  • Contractors' estimates should include a number of basic factors such as moisture control. Insulation is also a must and it's important to check for radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is common in some parts of the US.
  • For $500 -$5,000, Do-It-Yourselfers can waterproof the walls with a brush-on compound, then add carpeting, paneling, a dropped ceiling or other touches to make a basement into a more usable living area. Actual costs depend a great deal on what shape the basement is in at the start of the project, and whether the upgrades include such items as ground-level windows; improved lighting; a full- or half-bath; and a laundry area. The upper end of the price range includes hiring contractors to install proper ventilation, electrical wiring or plumbing.
  • Converting a basement into a reasonably comfortable and legal rental unit averages $30,000 -$50,000, according to OldHouseWeb.com.
  • Nationwide, basement remodeling costs average $51,000 -$67,000 for a project which includes a 20x30-foot entertaining area with wet bar, a 5-x-8-foot full bath, 24 feet of partition to enclose a mechanical area, painted walls, ceilings and trim throughout, exterior insulation, doors and electrical wiring, according to 2006 annual cost vs. value report by RemodelingOnline.
  • A lot depends on how much is included and the quality of the final project. Remodeling Online says finishing basements in relatively new homes runs about $20 -$25 a square foot, or $30,000 -$50,000 for 1,500-2,000 square feet -- but costs can start at $100,000 (and go up) to create a fully-finished space.

What should be included:

  • Finishing an unfinished basement is similar to building an addition or a new home, but generally the project is smaller and a lot less expensive. Waterproofing and insulation is key; the US Department of Energy gives a detailed overview complete with cost estimates for a range of options.
  • Local planning departments usually have specific regulations on ceiling height, access doors, radon ventilation, waterproofing and other details of the basement remodeling process. Many building codes now require upgrades such as residential fire sprinklers for new construction or major remodeling projects. Ask about local requirements and get all required permits (or make sure the contractor does this). Depending on the location, permit costs can be next to nothing or extremely expensive; find out exactly what they are and include them in the project's budget.
  • Foundation walls and floors are almost never straight and plumb, which can make remodeling difficult. Companies such as Owens Corning and Basement Systems sell complete basement-finishing systems which many contractors use.
  • Better Homes & Gardens lists 10 tips to keep in mind while finishing a basement, and ThisOldHouse.com looks at the remodeling process.

Shopping for basement remodeling:

  • Be clear about how the new space is going to be used and, if the basement is currently a storage area, where everything will go once the project is done. Better Homes & Gardens offers design ideas to keep in mind. For inspiration, ThisOldHouse.com provides a quick photo gallery of one basement's sparkling transformation.
  • Contractor referrals are available through the National Association of Home Builders and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.
  • Get estimates from several companies; request and check references. Understand exactly what is (and isn't) included in each estimate, and whether the contractor will do the paperwork for required building permits. Ask about the contractor's length and type of experience, especially if there's anything unusual about your project. Be sure a company is properly bonded and insured and licensed in your state. See if there are any complaints with the Better Business Bureau.
Installing Shutters on Your Windows

Flyover Video of Panther Lake at Orange County NationalLong ago shutters on a house played a vital role in keeping windows from being damaged by storms and high winds. Today most houses use shutters mainly for their aesthetic value, but their are companies that still manufacture fully operational shutters for your house that still do their job in keeping the windows intact during a storm. The vast majority of shutters in use today are made of polyurethane and are bolted to the side of the window, over time these shutters typically fade in color and become brittle, often cracking and falling off the wall. While the newer plastics and manufacturing process have given these shutters more durability they often don’t hold up as long as they could.

Another problem of the esthetics shutters, aside from their non-functioning nature, is the fact that they have become much more expensive in the past few years. A pair of polyurethane shutters for just one window can cost you upwards of $250 and that’s not including installation.

Finding the Research You Need

Moving isn’t a laughing matter. It’s a serious challenge to your organizational and sanity keeping abilities. With so much at stake, mainly your stress levels, you really have to take it seriously and approach it as a wide scale operation. I always put moving, packing and planning off to the last minute and each time it ended up being a massive headache that could have been avoided had I been using search sites like national movers to give me a hand with all my moving needs. Seriously, I have no idea why hadn’t checked before but after finding this website I face palmed myself! It’s strange, at times, to realize you have the best utility to find information at your fingertips but often it’s over looked simply because of the sheer scope of it all. Who would have thought that such a specific site existed to help you find a moving a company?

Apparently, there are a lot of choices when you’re trying to find a company to help you out. There are all sorts of different types ranging from the guys who will go cross country, to the companies that are basically aimed at helping offices and companies move themselves while other yet are smaller, independent outfits like Two Guys and a Truck. No matter how I chose, it was going to make things that much easier for me in the end. I absolutely despise trying to do move, I just don’t have the organizational talents or the desire to plan such an extensive operation. I’m an impulsive, fly by the seats kind of guy so something like this goes against every grain of my being. I don’t mind putting down some cold, hard cash to a company who can make one of the most dreaded things in my life an easier trip.

Exactly What Makes A Fantastic Bedspread?|

Some Things You Need To Understand About Bedspreads

Your bedroom should be a haven of comfort and style. Your bed needs to be the source too. The truth is, owning a top quality and charming bedspread may be what you need. It’s a wonderful way to complement the bedroom, since it is a great replacement to bed toppings, and can mean much to your comfort.

Customarily, bedspreads cover the top bedding and they come as a single-piece material which is either quilted or lined. You will find two principal types, one style may fit the sides of the bed securely, termed as a tailor spread, and the other bumps the sections and base of the mattress, referred to as a throw spread. For several decades, these spreads were just made by hand but this, also, developed and changed as producing more machine-made goods had become preferred and more practical.

There are several good reasons why this is regarded as one of the valuable components of the room and it is not simply tied up to highlighting a boring room. When you think about bedspread from a design and style viewpoint, for starters, you know that it needs to go with the colors and style of the old room, hence satisfying your inclination in the process. Two, buying a product which is long lasting, cost-effective and easy to maintain is equally as vital. The thing is, choosing an easy-care bedspread which could be laundered right away can decrease the cost or hours used dry cleaning, that gives you more freedom to engage in other stuff.

You could get awesome packages by ordering spreads on year-end sale from your nearest retail outlet or look for one on numerous famous services online. Outlets and makers commonly sell them for more than $30 yet this would rely on the design and quality of the bedspread itself. Furthermore, 80% of home owners commonly search for <a href=”http://bedspreads.us/”>the best bedspreads</a>and they obtain or add those with floral and modern design to their eclectic selection.

When You Should End Your Deal With Your Contractor

Our house is around one hundred years old, it’s an awesome airy home but it absolutely shows its age. We recently renovated our basement and we went through 3 contractors. It is not easy being a contractor’s customer, as we know much too well. The first one came in, promised us the moon along with the stars, every day he arrived at least 2 hours late and quite often he wouldn’t even turn up. The next one presented us an ideal quote and then he tried to overcharge us. And the third one; while he carried out his job, he was constantly on time and he wasn’t pricey. The job was, however badly done so we weren’t happy with the quality of his work. But he was the lesser evil.

Different people have distinct ideas on when you really should quit your contractor, however I say after having a week of struggling with incompetence it’s pretty safe to understand it’s simply not gonna work out. It’s always best to express the reasons you will no longer be employing them (e.g. never on time, a great number of breaks, an excessive amount of a price increase, etc.) than to dance all around them. Be very clear and succinct when explaining what exactly is on your mind, don’t get angry and assure them there are no hard feelings among you, but that you are not used to working together with people that way and you’d prefer to have a much smoother renovation process in your mind.

If you have signed an agreement it gets complex. Depending on what’s reported on your contract maybe you have to take issue in the small claims court. Try to be as polite and serene as is possible to ensure the situation doesn’t escalate. Discuss where he/she has failed to fill in his/her part of the contract and why you like to terminate it. Should you come across somebody reliable, friendly and not high-priced ensure that you keep them pleased.

Reasons To Eradicate Asbestos In Your Home

Insulating your home is a vital task in northern nations, and selecting the proper kind of insulation that fits all of your requirements is often hard. In the past most houses were insulated with Asbestos; the employment of Asbestos has been suspended in most first world countries globally because of the health risks. Lots of things are actually built using asbestos, due to the many natural and chemical attributes. Asbestos is a number of six naturally sourced silicate materials, comprised of thin fibrous crystals, it is a very strong material resistant against fire and heat, it has average tensile strength and in addition it is resistant against chemical damage and doesn’t conduct electrical current, in addition, it is effective being a sound barrier, every one of these features make it the prime selection for insulation uses and other things like patio and garden furniture, car brakes, etc. The utilization of Asbestos for insulation came into common use in the late Nineteenth century in bloom with the industrial revolution. Only until a few decades ago, in the late 70’s more research was done over the health effects asbestos have on the human body and we realized it’s such a significant threat.

The commonest means of being exposed to asbestos is by being surrounded by them and shifting them or disturbing them, this way you inhale the air with flowing fibers. The fibres make their way to your lungs and after several months, a long time, decades irritating your throat and lungs sooner or later causing inflammation and scarring in the bronchioles or throat, which often can consequently lead to serious respiratory system problems.

Asbestos has been a categorized carcinogenic in several developed countries ever since the late 70’s. Studies have shown that exposure to asbestos might cause lung cancer in addition to a somewhat rare cancer in the membranes that line the chest and abdomen. Contact with asbestos might also add to the chance of an illness referred to as “Asbestosis”, that is an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs which could cause difficulty breathing, coughing and permanent lung damage. All these illnesses from asbestos particle direct exposure are very unlikely, unless you are continuously exposed to asbestos fibres in the air. It’s considered smart to remove asbestos from your own home, but get it done by a specialist. An expert will have all the equipment necessary as well as being an expert who wouldn’t put at risk his/her own life or that of the individuals residing in the home.

Tips On How To Be Safe While Making That D.I.Y. Project Come True

For some, weekends are a time to relax and relish the company of friends, however for most home owners weekends are for fixing up the home and embarking on D.I.Y. projects that appear endless. If you are a home owner, then you might have tried being handy so you can avoid the cost of paying out an expert the overpriced rates it will cost. But to take on even the tiniest of projects all by yourself might seem overwhelming, so here is a list of a few things I normally do when plunging into a new challenge.

Approach:
You will find it helpful to write all of the ideas or thoughts on the way you want the task to develop, get started by finding ideas if it’s a decor job, take pictures, take a look at decorating internet sites, mags, ask friends and family. If it’s harder than merely painting a wall and you will have to do some electrical work or plumbing related work and you’re at ease executing it yourself, then you’ll definitely must make sure you have all of the tools necessary and that you know exactly what you are doing, because if you screw up you could be in a lot of danger plus it might cost you more to use an expert down the road to clean up after you. I’ve found an itemized list of tools to be utilized, will come in very handy regardless of seriousness of the task. You might also want to make a list of worst-case-scenarios, so you’re ready. So here it is: having everything required for your project handy, knowing precisely how you would like the project to develop and being aware what you wish as the end result is what you actuallyneed to achieve with all the planning.

Issues of safety:
Sound judgment is a big one here, be certain to know how to use the equipment properly and make certain the location you’re working in is cleared to ensure you don’t trip over anything. Shut down the water source if you are doing any improvements to plumbing and switch off the electricity if the job requires coming in contact with wires. Dress appropriately for the task and definitely wear boots or shoes that are comfortable with no open toes. In case you have small children make sure they are out of the way, so you don’t knock them over or even worse, same applies to pets. And have your first aid kit handy in case of a crisis.

Happy D.I.Ying!

Why Choose To Do It By Yourself

It sometimes seems sensible to employ an expert. If you’re redesigning your basement and you’ve got not a clue how to handle the vents as soon as you take away the ceiling panels, it will be a great idea to hire a specialist to sort everything out. If you are updating the floor in your own family room and you have not a clue of what a hammer looks like, I would say it’s a fantastic plan to get an expert. It is very important evaluate the time you’ll be spending on the task, if it’s some thing you’ll require a saturday and sunday to finish in that case I’d say you should do-it-yourself. On the contrary, if it’s something that involves considerable setting up and drawing out plans and alterations, you may not would like to spend your breaks for the remainder of your life to make your household attractive.

Any time you hire someone you always run the risk of being overcharged, particularly with something like re-decorating or remodeling. You will want to look around a lot to find the best value and even after you decide on someone, the wait can be quite a lengthy one. One of the advantages you will have when finding a experienced decorator in your house would be that the decorator will look at the house as being a clean slate. He/She hasn’t been looking at the exact same furniture for the past 20 years or so, so they can come in having a clear mind as to what will work for the home. An expert decorator also offers (ideally) years of experience in re-decorating paying attention to the owner’s style and the house’s architectural crutches. Chances are you are most likely not residing in your dream house, layout wise, so a professional decorator will help you overcome those crummy old kitchen cabinets. The designer may also help tackle the room in such a way you’d probably not have thought, an established designer provides you with many fresh new thoughts.

It might be nice to hire an expert designer in case you have little time, however, if you are low on budget you can also ask you good friends to be sincere with you and get them to let you know what they think of your space. Considering the variety of online resources, there’s very little need to seek professional assistance. You’ll find YouTube video clips for almost anything, and internet sites by the bucket load to assist you to coordinate material styles. If you commit a weekend break or two on your venture and you recruit two or three close friends to help you out (with the promise of beer) you can do it. And also you can make it so much fun.

The Features of Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets

Most real estate agents will explain to you that there is nothing more pleasing to potential home buyers than natural wood kitchen cabinets, because they bring a feeling of style and character into any kitchen. There are a number of other benefits of solid wood kitchen cabinets.

   1. Natural wood cabinets compliment any kitchen style. There are certain traditions relating to the woods and finishes most commonly used in distinctive kitchen looks, combined with traditions about cabinet door designs. For example, a darker hardwood like ebony, mahogany or cherry is best suited in a classic, country or eclectic style kitchen. It would rarely be used in present day styles.

   2. Wood cabinets are strong and heavy duty. Wood base cabinets will quite easily support virtually any counter top material, such as stone (granite, slate, marble, or concrete), and they hold up well under heavy use, in addition to steam and heat. Most little dings, dents or scratches can be easily fixed. In time, wood should be re-finished, restored, cleaned and even, painted or stained.

   3. Hardwood cabinets are clearly preferable to any material that’s MDF or veneered. Cabinets which have been created using glue must be properly maintained due to the fact that the glue can be ruined by the moisture in time and the laminate or veneer begins to curl or peel. Hardwood is not going to curl or peel.

   4. Wood kitchen cabinets can be purchased in a wide variety of wood options and stains, allowing a homeowner to settle on the color and wood that best fit the theme and décor of their home. A variety of woods could be finished in a number of ways to make a specific patina.

   5. Wood cabinets are safe. Unlike metal cabinets, there is nothing in wood cabinets which could chemically affect the food stored in them.

   6. Wood kitchen cabinets can never go out of style. That’s why their beauty and warmth  enhance the appearance and worth of your home when it’s time to sell.

Knowing these points, you now have a better understanding as to why many people choose hardwood kitchen cabinets instead of any other style.

Aside from that, there is also radial balance that can certainly be accomplished if you put a highlight as the focal point of a dining room.

There are actually many more suggestions regarding this kind of room:

•   Let it Seem Larger

Designers suggest making a spacious access point directly into the dining room to provide a more open overall look. You should certainly use a lighter window finishing, and set up mirrors to reflect light and provide the trick of much bigger space.

I’m a second-generation Asian-American living in the Pacific NorthWest, and boy do I love it here. While it rains a lot, that’s perfect for me, since I love the rain! Hiking around through the beautiful rainforests gives me plenty of time to think, and I love to bring my camera along to grab the occasional snapshot of wildlife or something else beautiful in nature. I started thinking, though, since it’s not always possible to take my camera out without completely ruining it, that I should start figuring out some other ways to make a bit of dough, and I thought that blogging might be a great answer for me.

With a bit of help from a group called Fully Researched, I started practicing my online writing skills so that I could build my own blog. They were a great help to me, since while English is my first language, I was never a very good writer. They showed me the basics of WordPress as well, which was a great help since it also showed me a bit about the basics of PHP programming and some basic Photoshop as well so I could design my own theme for my sites. I’d strongly reccommend you try out their classes and see if they can help you too!
